KALMAN APPLE - WRITER / DIRECTOR
Kalman Apple is an artist who has been mounting a career in
filmmaking since his graduation from the Art Center College of
Design fifteen years ago. It’s been a long road to his debut film,
the featurette "Speed For Thespians", which he wrote for the screen
and directed.
Along the way, he has made a few stops: Day jobs working in
advertising and directing commercials. He co-created some of the
more memorable moments in television ads like Rosie O’Donnell and
Penny Marshall bantering for KMART. He’s even won the prestigious
Clio award for the animated Disney Babies for Pampers. All the way
through it, however, Kalman’s artistic inclinations leaned towards
filmmaking and "Speed For Thespians" marks the culmination of years
of experience and desire. A lover of literature, Kalman’s debut work
is based on Chekhov’s little known one-act play "The Bear," a story
of love and betrayal that takes place in one room. Kalman’s adaptation
takes place on a New York Citybus.
With the success of Speed for Thespians, Kalman and his Producer,
Shameela Bakhsh, are now developing several projects as a writing team.
They are currently working on what will hopefully be Kalman’s feature
directorial debut.

"Speed for Thespians" marks Shameela’s debut as a Producer.
While pursuing a course of study that would have lead to a life in
academia, she helped out a friend making a feature film. On set for
the first time as script supervisor, Shameela was captivated by the
energy and spirit of the Indie filmmaking experience. She has since
continued to work in the industry in various capacities of the
production team. Shameela line produced another short film, The
Glass House as well as coordinated commercials for Directors'
Marcus Nispel, Doug Liman, David Veloz and music videos with Anton
Corbijn and Paul Boyd, to name but a few. She has also produced music
videos on location in Haiti and most recently, produced several
commercials for D’Arcy Advertising. During the past two years,
Shameela has focused her time and energies more creatively,
collaborating as a writer with Director, Kalman Apple.
